Express Entry is Canada’s primary system for managing skilled worker immigration and awarding permanent residence. Launched in 2015, this online tool replaced older “first come, first served” processes with a competitive model to better respond to labor market demands.

Rather than being a standalone program, Express Entry functions as an application management platform for three federal streams—the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and Canadian Experience Class (CEC)—as well as select provincial initiatives. Applicants submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) by creating a detailed online profile, outlining work experience, education, language test results, and other credentials. Profiles are evaluated and ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which awards points for factors such as age, education, work background, language proficiency, and adaptability.

The highest scoring candidates are periodically invited to apply for permanent resident status. Draws are held about every two weeks, and successful applicants must submit full documentation within 60 days. The government targets a six-month processing timeline for most applications.

A job offer is not required, but gaining one or a provincial nomination can significantly boost a candidate’s CRS score and selection prospects. Candidates can update their profiles to reflect improved language scores, new education, or additional work experience to increase their ranking. Profiles remain active for up to 12 months, after which candidates may submit a new profile if not selected.
